Plugflow Unit for rapid perturbation reactions
The Plugflow unit is a tool for studying chemical reactions in a timescale from a
few seconds to several minutes. In a typical experiment the Plugflow unit is connected to a
bioreactor containing a steady state culture. The Plugflow unit enables the execution of a
perturbation experiment without disturbing the actual cultivation.
A stream of the cultivation medium is led from a cultivation to the Plugflow Unit and mixed
with a second stream. The second stream imposes perturbation on the cells in the cultivation
medium stream. The length of the reaction tube inside the Plugflow unit is adjustable. This
provides the opportunity to study reactions, for example, in intervals of a few seconds. Analyzing
a series of samples reacting for different periods of time with the perturbation fluid, illustrates
the effects that a disturbance of the steady state has on the cell.
The reaction tubing loops are located in a pressurized, temperature-controlled chamber. Overpressure improves the gas
transfer from the chamber through the silicone tubing to the cells inside the tubing loops. The gas in the chamber can be air,
nitrogen, etc. In the chamber, the temperature can be controlled between ambient temperature and +50°C.
Reactions in the Plugflow unit can be stopped precisely by introducing the mixture into the Sampling Unit.
