Medicel Integrator is built on top of a hybrid database, which is designed to use a typical data warehouse architecture combined with an online transaction processing (OLTP) architecture.

The data warehouse is optimized to run data analysis against heavy data loads, whereas the OLTP part is exploited to store data entries generated by the applications. In a hybrid database the transactions which require immediate results and the heavy analytical queries are handled in parallel.

Data from different databases is integrated using an incremental population process, in which only the changed data content between the two database versions is populated.

The population process is a standard data warehouse procedure where only the relevant data is converted into
a format defined by Medicel Infomodel using a procedure called ETL (Extract, Transform and Load). The Medicel database supports a versioning system so that the older versions of populated data can be retained and used in parallel with more recent data.

The integration of multiple biological databases to one common data warehouse is carried out with Medicel Integrators ready data integration workflows.

Integrating all needed data into one unified format reduces heterogeneity of data and removes multiple records of the same biological object. Reducing the heterogeneity of data improves its compatibility. This gives the possibility to observe biological actions, that are measured with single measurements, as combined biological entities where each reaction has its own role in the function of an whole organ or even, organism.
